HUDL is AI for sports

If you’re a coach, you’ve probably heard of HUDL. For the rest of us, this Lincoln, Nebraska HQ’d company is the pacesetter for sports performance analytics and technology. “With about 98 percent of all high schools working with Hudl for at least one sport, 29 of 30 NBA teams, two-thirds of MLS teams and half the NHL, not to mention every single team in the English Premier League, most of Bundesliga, La Liga, Chinese Basketball Association and Super Rugby, Hudl is growing worldwide, at a variety of levels.”, according to Forbes. Even bolder, HUDL claims they are “revolutionizing the way coaches and athletes prepare for and stay ahead of the competition”.

So what the heck is this company doing that’s getting so much traction with teams? Very simply - they’re making it easier to access, analyze, mark-up and share sports videos. Even replacing the guy carrying the bulky camera with their own AI-enabled cameras that follow the action better than you can.

The core product for Hudl is simply the easy ability to share and mark up sports videos. Cloud storage is non-trivial part of the HUDL success story. Low cost cloud storage makes sharing and saving video so much cheaper and easier than ever before, so they are a beneficiary of this trend.

Hudl has started to make sports-specific cameras that replace the need for a videographer carrying the bulky camera with their own AI-enabled cameras that follow the action and immediately start the video upload as soon as the game is finished.

And the company have moved beyond just video to analytics. Send them game video for an analysis within 24 hours that maps key moments like turnovers, key stats like made shots by location, missed shots by location, by player etc. This saves time and is likely more accurate than manual entry by the coaching staff and is all linked to the video of the game for easy analytics.

Sorry to be almost a promoter for this company and their technology, but IMHO this is a great example of technology helping eliminate some tedious tasks like mapping stats and linking them to video of a high school sports game. Instead coaches can focus in quickly on key learning moments that will help a player improve, can get accurate and comprehensive stats that lead to insightful changes.
